The Real Guide to Matching Family Outfits (Without the Cringe)
Let me say this upfront: matching family outfits do not have to mean everyone wearing the same Christmas sweater with a forced smile. That era is over. The modern version of matching is coordinating — same colour palette, same vibe, but everyone still looks like themselves.
Whether you are prepping for family photos, a holiday card, or just want to look put-together for a weekend outing, here is how to do it right.
The Golden Rule: Coordinate, Do Not Match
Pick a colour palette of two to three colours and have everyone dress within that range. The key word is range. Mom in a terracotta crewneck, dad in a cream henley, kids in sage and white. Same family, same palette, nobody looks like they are in a costume.
Warm neutrals: Cream, terracotta, sage, denim
Classic: Navy, white, tan, soft pink
Earthy: Olive, rust, mustard, ivory
Winter: Charcoal, cream, burgundy, forest green
Start with One Anchor Piece
Choose one item as your starting point and build everyone else’s outfit around it. For our family, that is usually my crewneck. If I am wearing the MAMAs Club Crewneck in black, the kids go in neutrals — cream, grey, or denim — and my husband wears something in the same tone family.
Where to Find Coordinating Pieces
You do not need to buy an entire matching set from one store. Mix and match from what you already own:
- For mom: Our Mama collection has crewnecks, knits, and tanks in colours that work as anchor pieces for the whole family.
- For kids: Check out our Family collection for coordinating kids’ pieces. The Child LOVE & Black Hearts Sweaters are perfect for siblings who want to match each other without matching mom.
- For dad/partner: Keep it simple. A solid-colour henley, button-down, or crewneck in a complementary shade. Target and H&M have great affordable basics for men.
Matching for Different Occasions
Family Photo Sessions
This is where coordination matters most. Avoid busy patterns and logos — solid colours and subtle textures photograph best. Layers add visual interest (a jacket over a tee, a scarf, rolled sleeves). And please, no white sneakers unless everyone is wearing them.
Holidays and Special Events
Matching pyjamas on Christmas morning? Always a yes. Coordinated outfits for Thanksgiving? Keep it casual and comfortable — nobody wants to be in stiff clothes around turkey. Our seasonal pieces like the Hallmark Christmas Sweater make holiday matching fun without being cheesy.
Everyday Life
For grocery runs and park days, matching is really just about not clashing. If you are in a neutral palette daily (capsule wardrobe style), your family will naturally look coordinated without any planning.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- All-white outfits — Beautiful in theory. A nightmare with kids and grass stains.
- Too many patterns — One patterned piece per person max. Let solids dominate.
- Brand-new shoes — Nothing ruins a photo like uncomfortable shoes making everyone cranky. Wear them in first.
- Forcing it — If your kid refuses to wear the planned outfit, pick your battles. A happy kid in the wrong colour beats a miserable kid in the right one.
The best family photos are the ones where everyone feels comfortable. Coordinate the colour palette and let the personalities do the rest.
