What to Wear to Every Kid Activity: A Mom Outfit Guide
There is an unwritten dress code to every kid activity, and nobody tells you what it is. You show up to swimming lessons in jeans and realize every other mom is in athleisure. You wear leggings to a birthday party and feel underdressed. You dress up for school pickup and get asked if you have a job interview.
After years of trial and error, I have cracked the code. Here is your outfit guide for every kid activity on the calendar.
School Pickup and Drop-Off
The move: Elevated casual. Your favourite mama crewneck, well-fitting jeans or joggers, clean sneakers, and one accessory (a claw clip or simple earrings). This says “I have my life together” without saying “I tried too hard.”
Avoid: Pyjamas (we have all been tempted) or anything you would be embarrassed to run into someone in.
Hockey Practice and Skating Rinks
The move: Warm layers. Rinks are freezing, so think fleece-lined leggings, a chunky crewneck, warm boots, and a Hockey MAMA Toque. Bring a blanket if you are there for more than an hour. Hot coffee in your MAMA tumbler is mandatory.
Avoid: Anything that will make you cold enough to leave early. Your kid will notice.
Birthday Parties
The move: A step up from daily casual. Nice jeans (no holes), a half-zip or knit sweater, and ankle boots or ballet flats. If it is an indoor play place, swap the boots for sneakers you can move in — you will end up climbing something.
Avoid: Overdressing. It is a six-year-old’s party, not a gala.
Outdoor Playgrounds and Parks
The move: Athleisure that can handle sitting on the ground, pushing a swing, and possibly going down a slide. Leggings, a tank or tee, a zip-up or crewneck for when it cools down, and sneakers with actual grip. A belt bag keeps your phone safe while you climb.
Avoid: White anything. Trust me.
Sunscreen, water bottles, snacks, a small first-aid kit, and a change of shirt for yourself (one spill is all it takes). Keep a spare crewneck in the car for unexpected temperature drops.
Swimming Lessons
The move: Easy, comfortable layers you can sit in for forty-five minutes on a pool deck. Think joggers, a soft tee or tank, and flip-flops or slides. The humidity is going to do things to your hair anyway, so a claw clip saves you.
Grocery Store Runs
The move: This is peak crewneck territory. An L&B MAMA crewneck with leggings and sneakers is the unofficial Canadian mom grocery store uniform. Add sunglasses and a belt bag and you are handling business.
Date Night (Yes, It Still Happens)
The move: Elevate your daily pieces. The same jeans you wore to pickup, but with a nicer top, heeled boots, and actual jewellery. Your Silver Mama Drop Pendant Earrings instantly dress up any outfit. Add a leather jacket or blazer and you are transformed.
Family Photos
The move: Coordinate, do not match. Pick a colour palette (L&B MAMA colours like terracotta, cream, and sage photograph beautifully) and have everyone dress within that range. Our mama collection and family pieces are designed to mix and match for exactly this.
The goal is not to be the best-dressed mom at every activity. The goal is to feel comfortable and like yourself, wherever the day takes you.
