Self-Care for Moms That Goes Beyond the Bubble Bath
Can we talk about self-care for a minute? Because somewhere along the way, self-care for moms became synonymous with bubble baths and wine. And while there is nothing wrong with either of those things, real self-care goes deeper than a thirty-minute soak after the kids are in bed.
As a mom of two who has been through the early newborn haze and the thick of the toddler years, I have learned that the self-care that actually moves the needle is the boring, unglamorous kind. Here is what works for me.
1. Move Your Body — Even for Ten Minutes
This is not about getting a gym body. This is about how you feel for the other twenty-three hours and fifty minutes of the day. A ten-minute walk, a yoga flow while the kids play, or dancing in the kitchen counts. Movement is the fastest way to shift your mood and energy.
2. Feed Yourself Like You Feed Your Kids
How many times have you made your kids a balanced meal and then eaten their crusts standing over the counter? You deserve an actual plate of food. Meal prep does not have to be complicated — a few prepped snacks and easy lunches can change your entire week.
I started taking supplements consistently and it genuinely changed how I feel day-to-day. Yu Nutrition has been my go-to — use code SARAHAULBROOK for 25% off. It is not a magic fix, but filling the nutritional gaps makes a real difference when you are running on broken sleep.
3. Get Ready — Even a Little
I know this sounds basic, but hear me out. On the days I put on real pants and do even a five-minute no-makeup makeup routine, I feel like a different person. It is not about looking perfect. It is about the act of doing something for yourself before the day takes over.
4. Set One Boundary This Week
Self-care is also about what you stop doing. Say no to one thing that drains you. Skip the birthday party you do not want to attend. Let the house be messy. Put your phone down at eight pm. Boundaries are the most underrated form of self-care.
5. Wear Something That Makes You Feel Good
Getting dressed does not have to mean jeans and a blouse. Throw on your favourite mama crewneck, a pair of joggers that actually fit, and your best sneakers. When you feel good in what you are wearing, it changes your entire energy for the day.
6. Drink the Water
You know this. I know this. We all forget this. Get a water bottle you actually like, fill it in the morning, and keep it within arm’s reach all day. Dehydration makes everything worse — the fatigue, the headaches, the brain fog. This is the simplest self-care that delivers the biggest return.
7. Connect with Another Adult
Motherhood can be isolating, especially in the early years. Text a friend. Join a local mom group. Engage with an online community that gets it. Connection is not a luxury — it is a need. The L&B MAMA community on Instagram is always here if you need a space that understands.
8. Create Something
Whether it is journaling, crafting, cooking something new, or starting a small business — creation feeds a part of you that consumption cannot. This is exactly how L&B MAMA started for me. I needed an outlet, and building something of my own became the best self-care I have ever practised.
9. Go Outside
Fresh air and sunlight are free therapy. Even five minutes on the front step with a coffee counts. Vitamin D, natural light, a change of scenery — your nervous system needs this, especially during the long Canadian winters.
10. Stop Comparing Your Self-Care to Everyone Else’s
Your self-care does not have to look like hers. If your version of recharging is watching a show alone after bedtime, that is valid. If it is an early morning workout, great. If it is sitting in a drive-through line for five extra minutes of quiet, no judgement. Self-care is whatever fills your cup back up.
You cannot pour from an empty cup, but you also do not need a spa day to refill it. Sometimes you just need five minutes, a good crewneck, and a full water bottle.
Start Small This Week
Pick one thing from this list and do it intentionally this week. Not as an afterthought. Not if you find time. Schedule it the way you schedule everything else. You matter in this equation too.
